Detailed designs have been finalised for the installation of new traffic lights at the intersection of Orton Street and Presidents Avenue in Ocean Grove.
Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville said the State Government has invested $2.5 million for this intersection upgrade after the community raised concerns about road safety at the site last year.
Following extensive consultation with the local community and stakeholders throughout the year, Regional Roads Victoria has developed plans for a suite of works to improve safety at the intersection.
New traffic lights will be installed to improve traffic flow and provide safer access for turning traffic while dedicated cycling lanes and improved footpath connections will boost safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
A new raised safety platform on Orton Street will also help to physically slow vehicles approaching the intersection from the east.
The street lighting will also be upgraded to improve night time visibility at the intersection and ‘keep clear’ zones will be installed outside nearby driveways.
In the past ten years there have been two recorded crashes at this intersection, including one last April where a motorcyclist sustained serious injuries.
At community sessions earlier this year, about 90 per cent of people who attended or provided feedback said they felt the current intersection was ‘unsafe’ and reported seeing a high number of near misses.
Works at this intersection are anticipated to begin after summer next year to limit disruption during the busy peak season.
