PORTARLINGTON SAFE HARBOUR COMMUNITY OPEN DAY
A special community open day will be held next month to mark the completion of the new commercial jetty in Portarlington Safe Harbour, as well as major progress on the eastern breakwater.
The open day – on Sunday, 11 December – will include guided tours of the new commercial jetty and an opportunity to talk with the Parks Victoria’s team and building contractors.
The 190-metre long concrete commercial berthing jetty will accommodate the growing Bellarine aquaculture industry into the future.
The commercial berthing jetty was prefabricated offsite. The steel piles have been driven into the sea bed by a large pile driving barge. Precast concrete panels were installed to form the deck of the jetty.
The jetty is one of two major pieces of work in 2016 towards completion of the Andrews Labor Government’s $15 million investment in Portarlington Safe Harbour to support the aquaculture industry and help boost tourism.
Work on the eastern breakwater began in February.
These works have been carried out by PW Johnson Marine Contractors and Australian Project Solutions Pty Ltd.
They will explain the engineering challenges of the project such as carting materials across the bay from Mornington, and cutting and laying the jetty’s 82 piles and associated crossheads through the winter months with variable wind and water conditions.
Local suppliers have also featured strongly in supporting construction, such as Geelong’s Moolap-based Coen Precast, which managed the concreting works for the jetty.
