PLANNING FOR BELLARINE LINK AND BARWON HEADS ROAD UNDERWAY
Extending the Geelong Ring Road and duplicating Barwon Heads Road is a step closer with contracts for planning work on the two projects awarded today.
Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville today announced Jacobs Australia has been awarded the contract to complete a planning study for the two projects.
The Andrews Labor Government has invested $7 million to plan for the extension of the Geelong Ring Road, from Baanip Boulevard to the Bellarine Peninsula as well as the duplication of Barwon Heads Road, between Settlement Road in South Geelong and Lower Duneed Road in Mount Duneed.
Planning work will look at transport and land use, the potential economic benefits of the project, as well as any social or environmental impacts.
This will help to safeguard the busy tourist corridors and ensure that the region’s roads can accommodate increases in traffic as the local population and visitor numbers continue to grow.
The location of the new roads will be included in the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme, which will provide certainty as to where the roads will be built in the future.
Many heavy vehicles use Geelong Ring Road as their preferred route from western Victoria, through Geelong and onto Melbourne, while the Bellarine Link would provide an important connection to the Moolap industrial area east of Geelong.
Planning for the two projects will ensure that local communities are in the best position to take advantage of economic growth within the region.
Local residents and businesses will have an opportunity to provide feedback and help shape designs through an extensive engagement process which will take place during 2017.
The input from the community and businesses will be used to help VicRoads identify potential route options and road features.
All planning will be completed in 2018, and a Public Acquisition Overlay over the identified land will be applied. This will allow VicRoads to designate areas required for new roads and protect them from other development.
